AIA Pennsylvania Introduces the Girl Scouts to Architecture at STEM Expo

AIA Pennsylvania members Elysia Mikkelsen, Assoc. AIA, Kelsey Leed, AIA, and Stephanie Dando, Assoc. AIA all of Crabtree Rohrbaugh & Associates Architects represented AIA Pennsylvania at the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania STEM Expo at Millersville University last past Saturday, May 19th.

Equipped with the guidance of the Justine Tarrant, Assoc. AIA, co-founder of AIS: Architecture in Schools program in the AIA Northeastern PA chapter, AIA members worked with a smattering of the nearly 600 girl scout attendees to test the limits of spaghetti and marshmallows with a hands-on demonstration of the elements of building design and science.

The team at the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania shared some of the rave reviews from attendees:

  • My favorite part was seeing female STEM leaders showing our young girls the power of women in sciences.
  • As a parent, the organization was spectacular.  The kiddos learned a lot while having fun and all the helpers were so virtuous!!  My daughter could not pinpoint one specific item she liked most…she had a wonderful day!!
  • My favorite part was seeing all of the women in these fields.  It was great for my daughter to see so many females in these positions.

They added, “Thank you for showing the girls in our council that their futures are wide open, and they are free to pursue any career they choose.  The work you did on Saturday planted so many seeds that will blossom in the years to come. We are so grateful for your support of leadership education for girls and we look forward to continuing to partner with you in the future.”
