Bohlin Cywinski Jackson‘s Henry Island Guesthouse has been honored with a 2023 AIA Small Project Award in the category of small project construction, not exceeding $2,500,000 in cost. On a secluded site in Washington’s San Juan Islands, the guesthouse is an addition to a main residence the team previously designed. The sensitively scaled dwelling reflects the vocabulary of the main home while also forging its own identity and allows a new set of owners to welcome family and friends for an extended period.
Now in its 20th year, the AIA Small Project Awards program, established by the Small Project Design (SPD) Knowledge Community, recognizes small project practitioners for the high quality of their work and the impact that small projects can have on their users and broader communities. The program also aims to raise awareness of the value of design, regardless of size or scope. For a gallery of 2023’s recipients, visit aia.org.
