Meet the Speakers

Amal Mahrouki
Director of Legislative Affairs at AIA Pennsylvania

Amal is an Association Management and Government Relations professional with a talent for building coalitions and strengthening relationships through advocacy. Known for her dynamic personality and making a lasting impression, Amal has developed great relationships in the Harrisburg community with legislators, staff, lobbyists, association professionals, and the occasional artist. Amal has been with AIA Pennsylvania since September of 2014. She started as the Manager of Member Relations and Advocacy and was promoted to the Director of Legislative Affairs in January of 2017. Amal graduated from DeSales University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre. She spent the first three years of her career as a professional actor in live theatre before she began her work in Pennsylvania politics in 2013.

Leeann Sherman, MPS, CAE
Executive Director at ACEC/PA

Ms. Sherman began serving as the Executive Director of ACEC/PA in 2017 from the Pennsylvania Public Transit Association (PPTA) where she has served as executive director for four and half years. She has over 25 years of management experience in the tourism, transportation and non-profit sectors with a background in advocacy, business operations, fiscal management, human resources, board and member relations, professional education, meeting coordination and is a registered lobbyist for the consulting industry. Ms. Sherman was a driving force behind the success of Act 89 and ensuring that public transportation was an integral part of the funding program. As a member of the Keystone Transportation Funding Coalition, she is aware of the challenges and issues that lie ahead for the consulting engineering community. Leeann has a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management and master’s degree in Community & Economic Development both from Pennsylvania State University. She has served as Chair of the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Society of Association Executives (PASAE) and is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) the highest professional credential in the association industry and is a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).

 

Stephen Swarney
Executive Director at AIA Pennsylvania

Stephen M. Swarney, J.D. started at AIA Pennsylvania in September 2013 with a mission to make architects the voice of the construction industry. Steve is a registered lobbyist and has an extensive network that includes members of the Pennsylvania House and Senate and their staffs as well as design and construction related advocacy organizations. In his role at AIA Pennsylvania, Steve demonstrates extensive knowledge and experience in strategic planning, legislative advocacy, legal activity and grassroots activism. Steve is a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and the Pennsylvania Association of Government Relations. He received his Juris Doctor Degree from the Widener University School of Law, a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice Administration from Mansfield University and has completed Graduate Coursework in Organizational Leadership in the areas of Government and Community Relations. Steve resides in Harrisburg with his wife and three children, and spends some of his spare time as a PIAA Football Official.

 

John Wanner, CAE
Legislative Consultant, Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers

Mr. Wanner is the founder and president of Wanner Associates. John has more than 35 years of experience in government relations and association management. While presently the Legislative Consultant for PSPE, he previously served as the Society’s Legislative Director and Executive Director. Over the years he has represented dozens of organizations as a lobbyist and been chief staff executive for many of the firm’s association management clients. John has managed the passage of numerous bills for clients and takes a flexible approach to solving client’s organizational issues. He is a former officer of the Pennsylvania Association of Government Relations and past board member of the Pennsylvania Society of Association Executives. A magna cum laude graduate of Alvernia University, he served as Vice Chair of the Universities Board of Trustees and Chair of the Alvernia Alumni Association. John is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) and a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).
