Growing Pains & Triumphs: Small Firm Recruitment & Staffing Stories


The AIA Pennsylvania Small Firm Exchange (SFxPA) invites small firm leaders and aspiring firm owners to a discussion on small firm growing pains and triumphs.

The SFxPA Steering Committee has pinpointed three areas that we would like to address with the contributions of participants that have experience in recruitment and hiring. We are seeking to place a minimum of three small firm leaders on the forum agenda to share their stories and lessons learned in any of the following three areas.
Please check in with Olivia (operry@aiapa.org or 717.265.3443) no later than Friday, August 6 if you have any insight/experiences to share in any of the following areas:

(1) When to Hire | Pre-Recruitment

For those with experience, what are the biggest considerations that a firm looking to staff up must address to determine if they are ready to take on a new hire?

(2) Who to Hire & Where to Find Them | Recruitment

For those with experience, what roles and skill levels were the priority to support your expanding firm? Is there an “order” of hiring that worked or didn’t work for your firm? Do you have experience with contract employees (non-architectural & architectural staff)? What have you done to “sell” the opportunities that your small firm offers to prospective hires? What resources or services have you used to support recruitment? Top employee attribute you look for when hiring?

(3) What to expect with Onboarding & Training | Post-Hire

For those with experience, do you have an onboarding process or checklists? If so, can you share some highlights and the standout considerations?

The AIA Pennsylvania Small Firm Exchange (SFxPA) invites small firm leaders and aspiring small firm leaders to share your experiences and pose questions on a pre-determined topic every 2nd Tuesday of every other month at 12 noon for the 2nd-on-2nd Small Firm Forum.

The format is a roundtable discussion with all registrants invited and encouraged to participate. Each forum, a different member will open the discussion with a brief introduction to a predetermined topic. Interested members are asked to volunteer to introduce the topic in registration sign-up.

SFxPA Chair and forum moderator, Lee Calisti, AIA, of lee CALISTI architecture+design, will then open up the discussion to attendees** on a predetermined topic. All attendees are asked to come prepared to share their experiences or pose questions to the group relating back to the topic and prompts/agendas.

**Groups of 10 will be formed to facilitate discussion and greater knowledge sharing.
