About the Series

This session is the first in the AIA Pennsylvania Small Firm Exchange (SFxPA) volume 1 of the small firm seminar series with topics that span the business, art, and science that is the everyday reality of practice for the small firm “archipreneur” balancing it all. Attendees will walk away with tangible resources and insights to optimize their workflows and inspire their practices courtesy of experienced practitioners who have their pulse on the challenges and opportunities of small firms.

Attendance is not limited to members that fall into the small firm category but session content is geared to small firms.

About the Session

Join Douglas Teiger, AIA, for the first session of the Small Firm Seminar Series as he “zooms” out to get the bigger picture of your firm’s financials. This highly-interactive session will give you the best practices for generating financial dashboards that go beyond the numbers to reveal your firm’s story.

Zooming back in, Douglas will cover the critical KPIs that firms should be tracking to analyze milestones, billing, expenses, and profit firm‐wide. This session will equip you with the tools to develop a system to streamline your operations, promote a path to increased profitability, and allow you to dedicate more time to design. Douglas’ past sessions on financial management receive glowing reviews like, “hands down the best AIA event I have ever participated in 39 years of practice!”

Learning objectives:

  • Integrate firm sales, operations, and finances through strategic tracking and dashboard setup
  • Identify and apply “best practice” key performance indicators (KPIs) that you should be tracking to make more sound business decisions
  • Discover applicable tools to equip you with a more comprehensive understanding of your firm’s financial and operational health
  • Develop the foundation for a financial strategy tailored to your small firm structure

This course has been approved for 1.5 LUs

Join us for session 2, “ego VS empathy: How the stories you tell are making you a commodity“, on Wednesday, July 8th.

About the Presenter

With over 38 years in practice, Douglas has a wide range of experience.  He started working for other firms after graduating in 1982 which led him to open his own firm in 1989.  In 1999, Douglas formed a partnership, Abramson Teiger Architects (ATA), lasting 20 years and grew a 6 person firm into a 32 person firm.  As managing partner, Douglas’ ability to effectively streamline the operations allowed for more time to be spent on design and project research – a major factor in the consistent high level of design associated with ATA.

Douglas’s mission is to mentor young firms in order to accelerate their growth. Using his expertise, he acts as a sounding board for young principals as well as a guide through all aspects of a practice including Strategic Planning, Operations, Human Resources, Marketing and Business Development.  His life coaching skills facilitate a work/life balance as an important part of a successful practice.
