Course Description:
This 180-minute course focuses on the 2018 IECC requirements specifically tailored for multifamily buildings. This program is designed to provide participants with a deep understanding of the energy code provisions applicable to multifamily residential structures.
Throughout the course, we will explore the energy code requirements relevant to air sealing in multifamily buildings. Participants will gain insights into the specific guidelines and best practices for achieving effective air sealing in both residential and commercial components of multifamily structures. Additionally, the course will include an introduction to the concept of thermal bridging and its implications for energy efficiency in multifamily buildings.

Learning Objectives:
• Identify the differences between the residential and commercial provisions of the 2018 IECC in relation to multifamily buildings.
• Identify and eliminate the biggest sources of air leakage in multifamily buildings.
• Describe various, important air sealing design and construction details.
• Better understand the Energy Code’s requirements for air barrier construction and testing
• Identify what thermal bridging is, how it occurs and what effect it can have to a building and its occupants.
• Properly detail slab-on-grade construction to provide a thermal break and other details.
• Describe the value of continuous insulation and important design/construction details.
• Identify prescriptive requirements for continuous insulation and proper use of REScheck and COMcheck when pursuing tradeoff.

About the Instructor:
Adam Smith, Energy Code Specialist, PSD

Adam Smith is a seasoned professional with a wealth of experience in facilities and project management. With over two decades in the field, he has successfully overseen and completed numerous large construction capital projects.

Adam’s expertise extends to the realm of energy inspection and plan examination, as he holds a certification in ICC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner. In his most recent role at Camphill Ghent, a Gold LEED certified retirement community in the Hudson Valley, Adam served as a pivotal figure overseeing all facilities and grounds projects. He also managed the wastewater treatment plant, ensuring strict compliance with regulations set by the NYS Department of Health, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and local building codes.

Adam’s commitment to community service is evident through his longstanding involvement with the volunteer fire department, spanning over 30 years. Currently, he serves at the Ghent Fire Department and holds the esteemed position of First Lieutenant. With his extensive experience, certifications, and dedication to excellence, Adam brings a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to any project or endeavor.
