Government Affairs Committee

The mission of the AIA Pennsylvania Government Affairs Committee is to influence state legislation and policy to help the profession and to be an essential resource to members.  We understand the making, impact and effect of the built environment as it pertains to health safety and welfare.  We are the resource to educate legislators, officials, funders and the public about the value of architects and architecture.  We oversee relationships between the various government agencies regarding our practice.

Building Codes Subcommittee

The Building Codes Subcommittee makes recommendations concerning all building and other related codes impacting the architectural profession. The members are responsible for reviewing legislation and providing input in a swift manner. The Chair should attend all Review Advisory Council meetings if possible.

Legal Reform Task Force

The Legal Reform Task Force makes recommendations on legislative issues concerning the Statue of Repose, Tort Reform, and Certificate of Merit.

Licensure Task Force

Historic Preservation Task Force

The Pennsylvania Historic Tax Credit program is set to sunset in 2020.  Re-authorizing and expanding the Pennsylvania Historic Tax Credit is a priority to retain investment in and renew historic buildings within our local communities. This task force will meet monthly to discuss strategy, legislative language, coalition building, and grassroots efforts.

Grassroots Advocacy Subcommittee

The purpose of the Grassroots Advocacy Subcommittee is to act as the communications and grassroots engagement arm of the Government Affairs Committee. Specific initiatives include mobilizing the PLAN (The Pennsylvania Legislative Action Network), drumming up excitement for Architects Action Day and District Days, enhancing Town Halls and virtual listening sessions, and inspiring the next generation of Citizen Architects through introduction to civic engagement.

Outreach, Programming, & Foresight Committee

The intended purpose of the Outreach Committee is to address and direct member feedback to form strategic content and programming. Initiatives vetted in this committee and by leadership will be disseminated to working taskforces that report back to this small, strategic steering committee that will act as a think and plan tank.

Component Connection Committee

The newly formed Component Connection Committee is taking on the function of the Membership Committee with streamlined intent. Member recruitment, retention, and value remains top of mind. The Committee will function to connect the 8 local component chapter leaders (Presidents/President-elects) to the state and to each other to share best practices and keep current with key pieces of membership information disseminated by AIA National. This committee will also allow AIA Pennsylvania to have a better pulse on what is happening with the locals and vice versa. State and local programming partnerships will be an ongoing initiative tackled by this committee.

The newly name Committee on Design’s purpose is to promote design excellence among members of AIA Pennsylvania, the broader design community, and the public at large.

The main function of the Committee on Design is to provide a platform to showcase excellence in design that is produced by AIA Pennsylvania architects and selected by a panel of distinguished jurors. The committee organizes and implements the annual AIA PA Architectural Excellence Design & Special Awards.

Small Firm Exchange (SFxPA)

The Small Firm Exchange PA is the Pennsylvania arm of the National AIA SFx. Objectives of SFxPA are in accordance with National’s tenants:

  1. Advocate for small firms within the AIA and in outside organizations and agencies
  2. Promote leadership in Small Firm professional practice and leadership resources
  3. Identify legislative and political issues that impact small firms and bring awareness to these issues with the partnership of the Government Affairs Committee and Grassroots Advocacy Committee
  4. Plan and executive SFxPA Conference biannually alternating with regional conference.

Political Action Committee (PAC)

The purpose of the PA PAC is to support the mission of AIA Pennsylvania by soliciting voluntary personal contributions of financial support to state legislators who advance the interest of the architectural industry. The committee shall develop strategies for increased member donations and help to plan and promote events. The committee shall approve all expenditures in connection with the attempt to influence the positions of state legislators.
