Statement from AIA PA Board President

On behalf of the AIA Pennsylvania Board of Directors, I am thrilled to congratulate our very own Stephen Swarney, J.D., on receiving the Component Executive of the Year award. Under Steve’s transformational leadership since 2013, AIA Pennsylvania has achieved what many thought impossible—from the historic passage of Act 144 of 2024, establishing mandatory continuing education for architects after more than 25 years of advocacy, to transforming our organization from financial struggle to unprecedented stability and growth. He has been a part of the team who has established the AIA Pennsylvania Foundation, created innovative programs, and forged partnerships that have elevated our members and strengthened our profession statewide.

What sets Steve apart as a leader extends far beyond his strategic accomplishments and impressive legislative victories. Steve understands that great organizations are built by great people, and his ability to attract, develop, and retain exceptional talent while fostering a collaborative environment has been fundamental to our success. As Board President, I’ve witnessed his partnership approach to governance—he doesn’t simply report to the board but engages us in strategic conversations that guide our decision-making. His unwavering commitment to both our members and staff, combined with his authentic leadership style, has earned him remarkable respect throughout our profession. Steve is an innovative thinker and encourages new ideas and programs, with no passion project being too big or too small if it is in support of our members.

This Component Executive of the Year award is well-deserved recognition for someone who’s made AIA Pennsylvania better in every way that matters. It reflects the trust our members have in what we’re building together and the respect we’ve earned throughout the industry. Steve, on behalf of everyone at AIA Pennsylvania—congratulations. You’ve made us all proud, and frankly, this recognition is long overdue.
