I am Alyssa Green, a small-town girl with big city heels. I started my educational career at Drexel University and graduated from Marywood with a Bachelor of Architecture. While at Drexel University, I was able to work full-time for Sowinski Sullivan Architects in center city Philadelphia. They specialize in transportation, so it was unique to understand the technical side as I rode Septa through the city. During my time at Marywood University, I was fortunate enough to work for Air Balancing Engineers in my hometown. I was also able to shadow Sordoni Construction my last semester. At the time, Sordoni was working on a new addition to one of Marywood’s buildings. I was able to experience first-hand how the construction phase flows. I am currently studying for my exams while working full-time at MDI Built in Bloomsburg, PA. I have been able to obtain experience with the design phases and meeting with clients and business aspects. In the limited free-time I have, I am a volunteer firefighter for Nescopeck Township, I volunteer at my church St. John Bosco, and I help with my family’s catering business. On Sundays I watch the Eagles play, Go Birds!
Interview Questions:
Q: What sparked your interest in becoming an architect? What is your earliest memory of architecture:
A: While growing up, every year my parents made it a point for our family to take a day trip to New York City the Monday after Thanksgiving. Each year we would pick a different area of the city to explore. We would go to Times Square, Battery Park, Central Park, the Met Cloisters, Harlem, Brooklynn and so much more. We would walk the streets and go to the famous landmarks, and then we would wander around and discover our own landmarks. These trips sparked my curiosity into the world of architecture. Standing on top of The Empire State Building made me realize that I wanted to be like King Kong and experience the world from the tops of the skyscrapers.
Q: Why is licensure important to you?
A: Licensure is important to me because it validates all the hard work and dedication I have spent on my career. I want to be licensed so I can have my own business, but I also want to be licensed because it not only will prove to others, but it will prove to myself that I accomplished this. That all the sleepless nights and weeks, all the sweat, and blood (from building models) was worth it. Being licensed is my American Dream.
Q: In your “spare time” do you pursue any interesting hobbies or extracurricular pursuits?
A: In my spare time I love to watch the Philadelphia Eagles win. GO BIRDS!
