The Sustainability Pitch: What Actually Works with Clients

As energy codes evolve and construction costs continue to rise, architects and design professionals are increasingly asked one important question: “Is sustainable design really worth it? How much do I really have to do?” This session explores how to communicate the real-world value of building beyond minimum code requirements, focusing not just on energy savings but also on comfort, durability, resilience, resale value, and long-term operational performance. From healthier indoor environments and tighter building envelopes to fewer maintenance issues (and yes, fewer unwanted critters), attendees will gain practical strategies for helping skeptical clients see sustainable design as a smart business investment rather than an added expense.

Join us for a timely discussion on Pennsylvania’s transition to the 2021 Commercial and Residential Codes, how the increased environmental standard requirements are affecting design, and practical detailing “hacks” that can meet or exceed code requirements without busting the construction budget.  Through case studies, cost-savings discussions, and ROI-focused conversations, this session will provide tools and talking points to better communicate the long-term financial and functional benefits of high-performance design.
