The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has elevated 73 member-architects and three non-member-architects to its College of Fellows, an honor awarded to architects who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession and made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level. Architects elevated to fellowship can be identified by the designation FAIA after their name.

One AIA Pennsylvania member, Maureen Guttman, FAIA, is among the 2023 Class of Fellows. A past President of AIA Pennsylvania and AIA Pittsburgh, she is nationally recognized as a climate champion and advocate for high-performance building standards and practices, engaging the public and AIA members through tireless work on energy codes.

The class of 2023 had 217 candidates submit for consideration into the college. Of those, 73 (roughly 34%) were elevated to fellowship. The elevation to fellowship is conferred on architects with at least 10 years of membership in the AIA for one of six nomination categories or objects of nomination. Maureen was nominated and elevated to fellowship for her service to society, a sub-object under “Object Five: Alternative career, volunteer work with organizations not directly connected with the built environment, or service to society.”

In 2010, Guttman was honored with the AIA Pennsylvania President’s Award in recognition of a career dedicated to advancing building code adoption and enforcement, and incorporation of sustainability into regulated building practices. As the former chair of the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code (UCC) Review and Advisory Council (RAC), she was instrumental in shepherding Pennsylvania’s adoption of the 2015 ICC codes in 2018. Maureen’s career has spanned private practice, government service, running a non-profit organization, and active volunteer contributions to numerous related industry associations. She is currently a Senior Fellow with Energy Solutions.

The new AIA fellows will be honored at a ceremony during the AIA Conference on Architecture 2023 in San Francisco. Learn more about fellowship on AIA’s website.
