The course explains the key design responsibilities and role the landscape architect plays in the planning, design and construction of rooftop landscapes. Landscape architects collaborate with an extensive project team of design and engineering professionals to navigate the regulatory landscape and coordinate numerous trades of work associated with these complex landscapes. This course will provide a general overview of the various rooftop typologies landscape architects are involved with and the specific rooftop design components they address including planting, horticultural soils, irrigation and site architecture. Each of these components are closely coordinated with the other project disciplines to comply with applicable code requirements and function seamlessly with the building as a whole. Four green roof case studies will also be presented to provide examples of approaches to designing on structure, important interactions between the landscape architect and project team, highlight the various landscape architectural rooftop components, constructability considerations and lessons learned in construction.

Learning Objective 1:
Participants will become familiar with the project design team, role of the landscape architect and level of interactions among project disciplines associated with landscapes over structure. This course is designed to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the general public by highlighting the importance of designing rooftop components to applicable building code requirements to prevent components from being detached from the roof during a storm event.

Learning Objective 2:
Participants will learn various design approaches to achieving built landscapes over structures through four case studies of built green roofs. Participants will gain a better understanding of constructability considerations for the rooftop landscape components and the lessons learned during construction. The occupants of the building are at risk if the building structure is not designed properly to accommodate loading and structural connections of rooftop elements, address stormwater roof run-off and provide adequate egress to and from roof areas.

Learning Objective 3:
Participants will become familiar with the various rooftop typologies that landscape architects design over structure. Learning Objective 4:
Participants will be able to identify the specific design components and responsibilities of the landscape architect for rooftop landscapes. Participants will also learn the typical design responsibilities of other project team members that often interact with the landscape architect. The building design can be
